About Bay Harbor Island Homes
Bay Harbor Islands is a town comprised of 2 islands located in Biscayne Bay, bordered to the East by Bal Harbour and Surfside, Indian Creel Island to the South and Biscayne Bay on its West side. The Western Island is comprised exclusively of single-family homes and the Eastern Island containing Apartment buildings and the business district which includes office buildings, restaurants and a Cadillac dealership. The town was founded in 1947 by Shepard Broad who was a banker and a lawyer. The causeway leading from Bay Harbor Islands, Westwards to the main land is named after Mr. Broad. (Broad Causway). Bay Harbor Islands is also home to the Ruth K. Broad K8 elementary and middle school, a top rated public school, named after Shepard Broad's wife.
The canal that separates the 2 islands provides sheltered dockage to smaller vessels. The canal that separates the Eastern Island from both Bal Harbour as well as Surfside, is quite a bit wider and can accommodate larger vessels, although on that side of Bay Harbor Islands, you will only find condominium buildings and no single-family homes. If you are a cigar enthusiast, one of the nation's largest cigar distributor calls Bay Harbor Islands home, Mikes Cigars is located right next door to the Cadillac dealership.
